Mom Gives Free Facials and Portuguese/Brazilian Food!

Congratulations to my mom! She graduated from the New York School of Esthetics in Tarrytown, NY this past Tuesday! I'm so proud of her! PLUS- I get free facials/waxing services!

My mom was really excited to start school, but she was also really excited that her school was located in such a food-fabulous town. She's tried everything by now!

When I went to visit her a few Wednesdays ago, she spoiled me at the spa (the students work at the Tarrytown Day Spa which is part of the school), and then took me out to a place that she had never been to either... Caravela! Her classmate recommended it to us as we were walking out, so we figured we'd give it a try...

The place was DEAD at around 12 PM on a Wednesday so I was a bit freaked out, but everything was OK!
They brought us bread and some kinda sausage with olives.

We got the Prix Fixe... I got a Mixed Green Salad to start. Mom got a Seafood Salad. The portions were almost WAY too big.

For entree's I got a Roasted Chicken and mom got the Steak. They were both really delish! They both came with Steamed Veggies and Rice and Beans which were insignificant...

The somewhat disappointing part was dessert and you know how much I love my dessert. We were going to get the fresh fruit as one of our choices but they were "out". Ok, so we got Flan and a Mixed Berry Tart. Flan=good. Mixed Berry Tart=sitting in the fridge for a while?

Steve Earle... A Crazy Son Of A Gun!

On September 14, 2011, I went to see a crazy guy named Steve Earle play a million different instruments at the Williamsburg Music Hall. We joked that it was a requirement to be able to play at least 17 instruments to be in his band.... everyone like rotated playing an electric guitar, acoustic guitar, violin, piano, banjo, accordian, etc...I never heard of him until a few nights before, when I requested to go to the concert with Luke and his mom, aunt, uncle, and cousin. They are such a funky family, I LOVE it! And they know how to parrrrrrr-tayyyyy!

Before the show, we stopped at a restaurant called Loreley... I guess it was a modern twist on German classics. I.E.- Schnitzel Fingers, Bratwurst with Fries, etc.

Ahhh!!!! A fat kid's dream!

Schnitzel Fingers (HA!) with Fries

Frikadelle (Pork Meatballs) with Fries (It reminded me of a Falafel!)

Cheese Spatzel with Bacon... OMG this changed my life!

On our walk to the show, we passed by Saint's Alp Teahouse where we got Bubble Tea because who can pass on Bubble Tea? WE GOT THE BEST FLAVOR!

The Gifts Of...

Finding a hot-ass boyfriend, who happens to be a talented musician, who also happens to be great with children, who also happens to be hilarious, and finally also happens to be just the kindest person I've ever met... he can get me fed for free at Barcelona Wine Bar!

It's kind of ironic because the first time we both went there was a few months ago, right before his friend executive chef Christian Petroni was leaving the restaurant to start his own thang. Then fast-forward a couple of months, a band named Cloud 9 asked Luke to fill in on guitar. They had a few shows already booked at Barcelona in Fairfield!

They played great, but I was more interested in the food! J/K! But seriously, I was only interested in Luke and the food...

Road Trip to Vermont!

For this past 4th of July I was lucky enough to be invited to go to Vermont where Luke has family! This trip involved lots of family get togethers, food, fun, and Sudoku.

But this blog IS about food so here are the highlights!

The first big stop was the Charlotte Berry Farm where we went strawberry picking. I love how Luke's mom is all about the spontaneous stops! This wasn't even planned! But holy shiz.... we got the best strawberries!

Our first indulgence was the strawberry "cremees" <--- i guess that's what Vermonters call "soft-serve ice cream"? Made with freshly picked berries!
Then we went to work to pick our little love nuggets! As you can see here, there were a bunch of perfect red berries, but there were also a bunch of green ones, and ones that were rotten or destroyed by ferrets or wild geese or whatever beasts thought it would be OK to ruin my strawberries.

By the end of our journey, we got plenty!

Then, in Burlington, we visited what seemed to be the "hot-spot" which was Church Street. It's a fun street that's only like 6 blocks. It's got clothing stores, coffee shops, restaurants, bars, food carts, live music, performers, etc.

Luke's cousin Cory is the owner of one of the food carts named City Hall Sliders.

The menu is quite simple.

So I can imagine how it would be convenient for both Cory and the customers. It's quick and it's phenom! He hooked us up with 2 Bacon and Cheese sliders!

The cute little sliders packed a punch and Cory offers many different condiments like jalapeno peppers, ketchup, mayo, pickles, etc.

Another food cart we tried was The Handsome Potato.

Basically, you get to pick what ingredients are mashed into your potatoes and then grilled.
We got sausage, sour cream, and sausage.....

I guess the menu/available toppings change every day? I'm not really sure but it was good! It's a simple concept but I can see how it would be a huge hit!

The next food event was a dinner at one of Luke's relative's house. Luke's mom is all about the gardening and growing her own vegetables and stuff and it's so awesome. Apparently Luke's aunts are also big garden people! I've always wanted a garden but having lived in an apartment my whole life, the only thing I ever attempted to grow was a Chia Pet.

We were very lucky because we got to eat these delicious, beautiful vegetables straight from (or close enough) the garden!

We also had fish:

Spinach Salad with Goat Cheese, Cranberries, and Walnuts:

A couscous like pasta, maybe Fregola (?) with Parsley, Scallions, Cukes:

White Rice with Walnuts, Scallions, and Parsley:

Baked Beans:

Steak with Gorgonzola:

And my final plate:

Everything was delicious! I love home cooked meals, especially when they're eaten outside on a nice day while enjoying listening to your boyfriend play the ukelele. I'm too blessed to be stressed...

On the way back from Vermont, we stopped at this random place to pee...

Turns out to be a really cute place with soft serve and regular hard ice cream, milkshakes, sundaes, and other delicious frozen treats!

Luke got the Maple Milkshake, and I got the Twix Arctic Swirl which is basically a McFlurry or a Carvelanche.

They were both delicious but due to my unfortunate physical rejection of creamy substances, as soon as I ate some of my ice cream, I continued on by regurgitating it all into a paper bag. I hope you don't take it personally Bob... your shizz was good.

Like I said before, I am way too blessed to be stressed!

Chopped!

This guy:

Is This guy's:

friend from high school.

The first guy is Chef Christian Petroni (Executive chef at Barcelona Wine Bar in Greenwich). The second guy is Luke.
Here is how I fit into the equation.

1. ([Miki+Food]+[Luke+Food]) / (Miki+Luke) = Food is top priority
2. Equation #1 + (Lack of Money X 2) - (Being friends with Christian Petroni)= Sickeningly overindulgent night of deliciousness!

Chef Christian was at Barcelona Wine Bar in Greenwich Connecticut until about a month ago. So, before he left, Luke made it a point to take me there.

Chef Christian was the nicest! Not to mention hilarious! Then again, any friend of Luke's is most likely guaranteed to be funny because Luke only hangs out with the elite of the humorous persons.

For dinner, we didn't have to order anything! They just kept bringing out plate after plate of cheese, meat, veggies, fish, etc.!

Wild Striped Bass Crudo

Thank you Barcelona Wine Bar and Christian Petroni for a night of ecstasy!
